Benefits Of Being An Usher

A church that is growing always needs Ushers. Believers have a deep desire within to help at the end of the service, but they are lost from where to start and don't know what is expected of them.

A great way to start is by letting the Pastor know that you are keen on being an Usher so you can be trained. Ushers are to have a servant attitude and should be willing to be in church prior to the start.

These are 6 Benefits I have seen being an Usher over the years

Until I got saved at the age of 35, I used to stammer heavily and would only talk in monosyllables (yes or no) to a group. I would never dare be proactive and remained the shy person, but deep in side I wished I could be an extrovert. When I took the initiative of being an Usher, dedicated my self to the Lord, my situation took a U turn and the true desires deep within me started to shape up

1. Over came stammering - The first noticeable change I saw within 3 months of Ushering is, I overcame stammering and for a person who felt ridiculed his entire life there was no better gift than this.

2. Gained self confidence - Being an Usher I was the first person to welcome new people to the church, and make them feel welcomed, this greatly boosted my confidence and I was now a new being.

3. Sound System - I learned to handle a 24 channel mixer (sound system) and was instrumental in reducing the lead time to set up the sound system by over 60% in simple terms 35 minutes instead of 90 minutes and getting the sound system up every week in an organized manner with fewer glitches.

4. Delegation - Delegate Ushers to different roles like Unpacking and Packing, laying the chairs, from a person who was a follower I guess it was GOD'S plan I lead.

5. Outside Church Activities - From being a shy person to being the organizer for food and games. From the last person to be picked up for any activity GOD had me the first person.

6. Pick and Drop - Its a blessing to pick and drop people, this is where the actual interaction takes place. One great blessing I still have while helping pick up brothers to church, without sounding rude is the Lord showed me how blessed I was, and led me at times to assist these brothers in different ways besides church activities like taking them for interviews and take care of other personal stuff on their behalf.

To conclude my role as an Usher in the kingdom of GOD has been very fruitful and satisfying because GOD made this servant a no body into some body confident for his Glory.

If you want to contribute your efforts for His kingdom this is a great place to start, till he leads you in some other ministry. If we remove our worldly thinking cap and put in our spiritual hat, I can assure you one thing, being an Usher the person who will be blessed the most is not the Pastor or the Church its "YOU"

I want to encourage you brothers and sisters if you are not involved in any church activity now is the right time to start and be a blessing to others and be blessed.

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell i the tents of wickedness.

  3. Hi Steven, this is a very good an honest confession you have put forward. Only this morning I was reading a post in "Vaishnavajan" on facebook and it made me think of "Seva". I am an Hindu, hence I can relate the same in Hinduism too. Vaishnavajan is simply a small pure vegetarian sect in Hinduism, and Seva means Ushering in God's house. What I am trying to say is that Seva or being an Usher transforms you into a whole new person that is kind, thoughtful and calm. I have followed Christianity and Hinduism very closely and and can vouch that volunteering help in God's house is one of the biggest blessing anyone can experience. Well written Steven, and sorry about the late reply.
